About Me
I qualified as a drama teacher and then had an eight year career in the commercial world. I turned away from this and trained in counselling in 1978/9.
For the next twenty years I worked with young people with emotional and behavioural problems, with their families and carers. During this time I had extensive experience of working with people who were depressed, anxious, abused, angry and suffering with a great variety of disorders. I found this work challenging and interesting. I progressed into management but found that this was not so satisfying and changed my career again.
Counselling and family work were the parts which I enjoyed, so I went on to complete a further counselling training (a diploma). Now I have a private practice but in recent years I have also counselled students, worked for the National Health, the Exeter Drugs Project and lectured in counselling at Exeter University.
I love my work and although people frequently share extremely painful things, I find the personal growth and changes they often achieve are rewarding for me too. I particularly welcome the challenges of honesty and creativity demanded by counselling and I continue to study the subject enthusiastically and to run occasional workshops for other counsellors.
I am married with a stepdaughter and two school/college aged children. My other interests are the arts and appreciating nature.
