About Me Text

About Me

I qualified as a drama teacher and then had an eight year career in the commercial world. I trained in counselling in 1979/80. I like my work. People frquently share extremely painful things and I find the personal development and changes they often achieve are rewarding for me too. I particularly welcome the challenges of honesty and creativity demanded in counselling. I continue to study the subject enthusiastically, to run occassional workshops for other counsellors and offer counselling supervision. Recently I have specialised more in relationship counselling and couples counnselling, although I still work with indivduals.

My Qualifications

  • 1979/80. Counselling Certificate; a two year general counselling course.
  • 1997. MA. Ed. for this degree I studied teamwork and leadership with carers and teachers of disturbed children.
  • 1999. Diploma in Individual Counselling. A two year course specialising in the perosn centred approach which is within humanistic psychology.
  • 2002. Training course, Sexual Counselling for the Sexual Abuse Helpline as a telephone counsellor. I now train and support the line workers myself.
  • 2003. Bereavement counselling certificate
  • 2007. I qualified as an Imago Couples Therapist. Only for experienced counsellors, this training included relationship advice, divorce counselling, relationship counselling and marriage counselling in Exeter.
  • 1979 to 2008. MBACP senior accredited counsellor/psychotherapist

This is like a british standard kite mark which applies to all my counselling in Exeter. It means Member of the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy (the main UK counselling accrediting body). Accreditation means approval of training, monitoring of practice and continuation of professional development. Senior means that I am more experienced. I observe the BACP's high standards of confidentiality and etchics.
